The Story Bus

Every Monday afternoon, Bee, Mo Mo and me visit our local Story Bus. It's essentially a children's library bus, jam packed with books from birth up to 5 and lovely displays, toys and activities like the felt story board and colouring pots. When we arrive, there is a singing session and then a story session- told by one of the two lovely story tellers who take the bus to different stops in Stockport (Cheshire- UK). After that, the children get to choose the books they want to borrow. This can include one story sack which contains a book and either a toy/puppet or a cd to go with the book. There are board books and bath books for Bee- she just loves the songs and being with the other children. It's such a brilliant idea!

This Week We are Reading...

It's just funny and unexpected and easy to learn! We particularly like the ogre doing yoga. Nick Sharratt is one of our favourite authors and as usual, the illustrations are just fantastic.

The Heart and the Bottle

I've not done a reading post for a while. We have been reading, but life has just been so busy recently, I haven't managed to write about our current favourite. Anyway, this book is just lovely. It is so moving, it really got me choked up. Mo Mo is too young to understand the true meaning behind it, just as well really as it is quite sad. The little girl in the story loses her father and becomes so melancholy that she puts her heart in a jar for safekeeping.  She struggles to find meaning in her life until, one day, another young child shows her the way.

"Once there was a girl, much like any other, whose head was filled with all the curiosities of the world. With thoughts of the stars. With wonder at the sea. She took delight in finding new things..."

Rabbit, Mouse and Owl are having a very important meeting about what to do if the Monster Of The Woods comes calling! Lots of cute little pictures and an even cuter little monster! Perfect for re-telling over and over again.

Teacher friends- you cannot help but be inspired by this lot!

A fantastic Pre-school setting at Casa Maria's. I would love my kids to attend a Waldorf- inspired nursery like this.

This Week We Are Reading...

We've had this book for ages, but keep coming back to it as there is always something that we missed the last time we read it! This is a book you can explore. The illustrations are amazing- each page is teeming with things to find and hidden people or objects along with little jokes; just great for talking about with little ones and big ones alike!

This is a magical story about a library that comes alive each night and a boy whose quest is to find a book that has been missing for 200 years. There's a moral to the story so it is thought provoking, and a little bit sad too.

Also, with my teacher head on- lots of great learning opportunities with this book!

Little Rabbit Foo Foo!

This book is about a  bullying bunny who is given the stark choice of either changing his behaviour or facing the negative consequences. It's got a repetitive rhyme/song which is easy to learn and it's funny. I love the way Mo Mo keeps saying, "I don't like your attitude," just like the Good Fairy! She is definitely extending her vocabulary.

Are You Getting Your 5 A Day?

Books that is, not fruit and veg! This is something we did at my old school in Year 1. Basically you choose 5 books with predictable text and repetitive word patterns for your toddler and read the same 5 books each day for a week or so. The idea is that the child will be able to retell the stories as they have learnt them off by heart. If you type in 5 A Day to Google, you just get a list of sites about healthy eating! After much searching I came across The Imagination Tree a brilliant pre-school blog jam packed full of amazing ideas and themed 5 a Day book lists.
